What is Nursing?

The good old Wikipedia covers this and also tells us what nursing is:

Art refers to a diverse range of human (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human )activities, creations, and expressions that are appealing to the senses   ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senses  )   or  emotions   (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotion ) of a human individual. Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge" or "to know") is the effort to discover, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_%28observation%29 )  and increase human understanding of how the physical world works.

Nursing is a profession focused on assisting individuals, families, (   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family )    and  communities                                               (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community  ) in attaining, maintaining, and recovering optimal health and functioning.

Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles.  ( Written by a MH nurse, following a online debate about what is a nurses role.. )

Supervised Community Treatment http://www.mhact.csip.org.uk/workstreams/the-mental-health-act-amendment-workstreams/supervised-community-treatment.html

Supervised Community Treatment (SCT) will be an option for patients following a period of detention in hospital. It is expected that this will allow a number of patients with a mental disorder to live in the community whilst subject to certain conditions under the 1983 Act, to ensure they continue with the medical treatment that they need. Currently some patients leave hospital and do not continue with their treatment, their health deteriorates and they require detention again - the so called 'revolving door'.

National Service Framework for Long-term Conditions This NSF has now been published. It sets out 11 quality requirements to change the provision of health and social care to enable people to live as independently as possible and to improve quality of life. These include support for family and carers.  See www.dh.gov.uk/assetRoot/04/10/53/69/04105369.pdf

Delivering the NHS improvement plan The DOH has published information about how it will deliver the NHS Improvement Plan (June 2004). It describes a change in culture from a service which does things to and for patients to one in which the service works with the patient to support them with their health needs. See "Creating a Patient-led NHS: Delivering the NHS Improvement Plan" www.dh.gov.uk/assetRoot/04/10/65/07/04106507.pdf

Mental Capacity Act 2005 This received Royal Assent on the 7th April and is due to be implemented in 2007. Its provisions will replace current schemes for Enduring Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection Receivers. The Act is underpinned by 5 principles:

q       A presumption of capacity

q       Right for people to be supported to make their own decisions

q       Right to make seemingly eccentric/unwise decisions

q       Anything done for someone without capacity must be in their best interests

q       Anything done for someone without capacity should be least restrictive of his or her basic rights and freedom

The Act is available on  www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2005/20050009.htm

Code of Practice for the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Certain parts of the Act start in April 2007 and the rest come into force in October 2007. For more details go to http://www.dca.gov.uk/menincap/legis.htm#timetable
